Warwick, RI - In response to Governor Gina Raimondo's latest version of her "More Debt, New Tolls Plan," Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Brandon S. Bell took the opportunity to reaffirm the R.I. Republican Party's strong opposition to Raimondo's tolling plan.
Chairman Bell stated: "There are still many unanswered questions as to how this toll plan will impact Rhode Islanders, including the simplest of questions such as how much it will be or on what bridges it will be assessed. It is ridiculous to think politicians on Smith Hill would adopt a plan that calls for new tolls statewide and millions in debt with so little information. Bell further noted that Rhode Island National Committeeman Steve Frias said it well when he wrote in a Providence Journal op-ed last week: "Rhode Island does not need more debt and new tolls to fix its bridges. Rhode Island needs fiscal discipline."
Chairman Bell urged the legislature to reject a half-baked revised plan in the closing days of this legislative session. Rhode Island's taxpayers deserve a General Assembly that will undertake its due diligence responsibility in a comprehensive and transparent manner and understand the economic implications of increasing the cost of doing business in Rhode Island. He concluded by calling on Governor Raimondo to drop this entire toll plan and stand by her campaign pledge not to increase taxes to fix every problem.
