- On Thursday, Speaker Nicholas Mattiello told WPRI 12 that it is was "outrageous" that Curt Schilling had not been deposed in the civil law suit. After refusing to give the House Oversight Committee subpoena powers, today Mattiello has promised to have a House investigation into 38 Studios.
In response, Rhode Island Republican Party Chairman Brandon S. Bell responded "What's outrageous is that it took this long for Speaker Mattiello to allow a House investigation into 38 Studios. Speaker Mattiello could have had Schilling and others subpoenaed last year after he became Speaker."
In the past, Speaker Mattiello has refused to allow the House Oversight Committee to use subpoena power. Mattiello has used various excuses to oppose an investigation by claiming that the General Assembly is not an investigative body, and claiming he did not want to interfere with the civil law suit or the probe by the state police. Also, in a Rhode Island Monthly story, Matteillo blamed "stone-cold conservatives" like Governor Carcieri "who put" the 38 Studios deal "together."
Bell commented: "I guess excuse time is over because the truth is finally coming out. It was State House Democratic insiders who were behind 38 Studios all along. Mattiello realizes now there is no use in trying to cover this up."
